Every year, thousands of people travel miles to embrace fall’s true nature out in the Northeast. For northern Californians though, you don’t have to travel that far.
“California has the most spectacular fall color in the country because of this contradiction of grand landscapes,” said John Poimiroo, who runs CaliforniaFallColor.com. “There is no question that the color in New England is glorious, but they don’t have this contradiction of rugged mountains.”
Here’s 10 areas you have to visit to see the best Northern California fall foliage:
Enjoy the pastoral palette of reds, oranges and yellows as you drive through the winding roads of Sonoma County. While you may need to wait until the end of fall, the Wine Country is “well worth going to for fall color,” Poimiroo said.
“Wine Country is different from the Sierra, there are still vistas of pure green vines, but turn a corner and then a wash of brilliant red comes into view, that then transitions to a past peak field of brown-ochre,” photographer Darrell Sano said on the CaliforniaFallColor.com website.
SUGAR LOAF RIDGE PARK
Embrace California’s redwood nature as the needles begin to change from bright green to a colorful yellow.
“It is a beautiful area. It is more of a coastal area,” Poimiroo said.
California’s longest-lasting peak usually occurs in the vineyards, Poimiroo said on his website. Take a stroll through Napa’s vineyards as the leaves begin to change colors. The best time to embrace Napa’s foliage is from October to November.
