Aliso Niguel’s Socks from Jocks outreach event breaks personal collection record

The Aliso Niguel High School basketball team collected clothing items and food to donate to the Orange County Rescue Mission, collecting 2,786 pounds of food this year and breaking their Socks from Jocks record of 2,211 pounds of food in 2016.

The 13th annual event collected socks, coats and canned food on Saturday, Nov. 11. The event was started in 2005 by former basketball players and was continued this year by senior Dylan Dickerson, junior Max Horowitz, junior Jack Steiert and junior Vom Steeg.

After meeting Saturday morning at the high school, the players drove to nearby neighborhoods and knocked on doors asking for canned and dry food items, according to a release. The basketball program also collected six large bags of new socks, used shoes, and gently used coats during its annual season Kick off Banquet.

Over the 13 years, the Socks from Jocks organization has donated more than 30,000 pounds of food — equating to more than 60,000 meals, according to the release.
