An air of mystery with this week’s O.C. top 25

This is one of those weeks when the Orange County football top 25 is a little mysterious.

Specifically … how is Los Alamitos ranked above Tesoro just a few days after Tesoro beat Los Alamitos, 48-44? Los Alamitos this week is No. 13. Tesoro is No. 15.

My ballot on Monday, Oct. 2, had El Toro at No. 12, Tesoro at No. 13 and Los Alamitos at No. 14. El Toro beat Tesoro. Tesoro beat Los Alamitos.

Maybe yours truly is at fault. I’ve written and said that Los Alamitos is the best team in the Sunset League. The data, though, shows that Edison remains the team to beat in the Sunset.

Otherwise, this week’s top 25 looks fine.

Edison moved up to No. 8 from last week’s No. 9 position after a tough 23-20 loss to San Clemente.

San Clemente is rock steady at No. 7. Some members of the media panel that votes on the O.C. top 25 have San Clemente above Servite on their ballots.

We will find out in the playoffs how San Clemente would do against Trinity League competition because San Clemente, like all Trinity League teams, would be in Division 1 when the playoffs begin Nov. 9.

As always, the bottom portion of the top 25 is intriguing. Aliso Niguel popped back in, at No. 24. Fountain Valley and Trabuco Hills are tied at No. 25, an interesting development because Trabuco Hills beat Fountain Valley, 24-14, on Sept. 8.

Orange picked up a couple of votes. The Panthers are 5-0. Their Golden West League competition is worth considering for future top 25s – Ocean View, Santa Ana, Segerstrom and Westminster all concluded nonleague play with 4-1 league records.
