Ducks make further roster trims ahead of opening night

Staring at a Tuesday deadline to get their roster down to the 23-player maximum, the Ducks on Monday sent four players to the American Hockey League’s San Diego Gulls.

It appears defenseman Jaycob Megna won a spot on the opening night roster over Jacob Larsson as Larsson was assigned to the Gulls along with forwards Giovanni Fiore, Kalle Kossila and Scott Sabourin.

Megna appeared to outplay Larsson in the preseason and his case for a roster spot might have been helped by the possibility of being exposed to waivers if the Ducks sent him down. Larsson is waiver-exempt and doesn’t require them.

Fiore impressed Ducks coach Randy Carlyle in his first camp with the team but it seems that they could go with veteran Derek Grant as an extra forward. It might also be a sign that Patrick Eaves could be back with the Ducks sooner than later after being dogged by a lower-body injury the entire preseason.

The Ducks are down to 27 players but can carry three extras as Ryan Kesler, Hampus Lindholm and Sami Vatanen are expected to be put on injured reserve. Reto Berra is still up as their third goalie but could serve as a backup to John Gibson in Thursday’s opener if Ryan Miller is unable to shake off his upper-body injury.
