Housing complex evacuated after ice jam leads to flooding

ATHOL, Mass. — A Massachusetts town has evacuated a housing complex and shut down a bridge after an ice mass broke free in a river and caused flooding.

Officials in the town of Athol say an ice mass broke off in Millers River and struck the Exchange Street Bridge around 7 a.m. Saturday, sweeping away equipment that attaches a water line to the bridge.

Authorities shut down the water line, closed the bridge and evacuated the nearby Morton Meadows housing complex for the elderly amid flooding in the area.

Residents at the complex were taken to the town hall until friends or family could arrive. Officials say no one has been injured.

State transportation officials have been asked to inspect the bridge before it reopens. Massachusetts emergency management officials are monitoring the situation.
