KC mayor gets high-profile fellowship with some interesting colleagues

Kansas City Mayor Sly James is going to Harvard, where he will be spending some time as a visiting fellow at the Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics.

James was selected for a program that brings prominent political figures to campus for short visits — usually a week — according to the school’s website. He joins a high-profile mix of fellows for the 2017-18 academic year, including former Trump White House press secretary Sean Spicer; Robby Mook, Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign manager; Chelsea Manning, the former U.S. Army intelligence analyst, who spent seven years in prison for releasing classified government documents before her sentence was commuted by President Obama, and MSNBC morning hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski.

The school’s announcement cites James for his role in introducing the downtown streetcar line, “smart city” technology and upgrades to the city’s infrastructure.

It is not clear when James, whose autumn schedule includes campaigning for the KCI airport terminal, will do his fellowship.
