Las Vegas concertgoer: 'It was a time of horror'

Brooke Huffer, 21, received tickets to the Route 91 country music festival as a birthday present from her boyfriend, Jesse Selders. The two were enjoying Jason Aldean’s set when shots rang out from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay casino, leaving more than 50 dead and hundreds wounded. She told the Herald’s Chris Villani mass chaos ensued as the couple desperately ran for their lives.

“(Aldean) had played about 4 or 5 songs and everybody was just in the crowd listening and there was a few loud ‘pops’ and I think everybody thought it was fireworks, nobody thought anything of it and then it continued and everybody was pretty confused…

“Jason Aldean stopped playing and ran off and the lights went bright and everyone started screaming and there was havoc like you would see in a movie…

“There were hundreds (of shots), it didn’t stop. It’s hard to believe that it was one person. I don’t know how, right when I would think it would be done, it would continue, it had to be 10 minutes of us running from the second it started until we got into a building and they never stopped the whole time…

“We ran into the Tropicana and tried to find corners to sit in. Lockdown sirens started going off in the Tropicana. Looking around, we could not find workers at any restaurants, everyone had just dropped and ran. We ran into a men’s restroom and went into the stall and there was a guy who was at the Tropicana and a couple of the girls from the festival who were in the bathroom with us. We sat in there for a good 10 minutes…

“There were so many false rumors. Some people were hiding and not moving and others were saying we had to move. We stayed put until we felt comfortable to walk to our hotel…

“Even though it was a time of horror, everyone I witnessed was helping others out and making sure others were OK. At the beginning, when we were still on the festival premises, we ducked down as low as we could and started to run and hide around corners…

“It was just a mob of people running and screaming and crying. I think we ran across a street, just ran in some random door. Everybody around us was just screaming…. You could tell who was a part of it walking through the casino and others were looking at me like we were crazy. One one side there were people drinking and gambling, on the other side there was a guy covered in blood…

“I am really shaken up, I am in shock still, I don’t know how, right now, they are saying 50-plus people…
