Local leaders trash Trump over attack on San Juan mayor

Bay State politicians and Puerto Rican leaders in the Hub slammed President Trump’s Twitter attack on San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz and his claim that residents of the island “want everything done for them when it should be a community effort.” Here’s what some of them they had to say:

• U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren: “I just got off the phone with Mayor @CarmenYulinCruz. I told her to keep up her heroic work & leadership on behalf of Puerto Rico … PR is in CRISIS. US citizens are dying. Millions of people need their govt’s help. Stop playing politics with their lives, @realDonaldTrump … PR needs help, not bullying, from the @POTUS. The definition of “poor leadership” is sitting at your golf club while millions of US citizens beg for your help.”

• Mayor Martin J. Walsh: “Boston stands w/ BU grad & San Juan Mayor @Carmen YulinCruz. #PuertoRico is suffering & our fellow Americans in PR need all of us.”

• Puerto Rican Festival of Massachusetts co-pageant director Marisa Ayala: “It is one of the most ignorant answers he could have given. He is who is stopping everything. There is no word to describe the stupidity of this man … He forgets Puerto Ricans are American citizens. We’re born under the American flag.”

• U.S. Rep. James P. McGovern: “This is outrageous: Trump on golf course while #Puerto Rico suffers. Instead of attacking courageous mayor, should do his job and help.”

• U.S. Sen. Edward J. Markey: “First thing Trump should do on Tues when he visits #PuertoRico for the first time since #HurricaneMaria devastated the island is apologize. Disgraceful and shameful.”

• Puerto Rican Festival of Massachusetts spokesman Greg Molina: “He continuously shows he doesn’t know what is going on on the island. His tweets are divisive … I’m embarrassed by the federal government’s response. There are truly 3.5 million Americans in Puerto Rico right now who have been abandoned.”

• U.S. Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy III: “To Mayor Cruz, your fellow Americans are inspired by your fierce, passionate leadership. We stand w/ San Juan & Puerto Rico.”
