A 26-year-old man was arrested Tuesday, Sept. 12, at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint south of San Clemente on suspicion of smuggling bundles of methamphetamine worth nearly $162,000 inside his car.

Around 5 p.m., at the checkpoint on Interstate 5, a Border Patrol K-9 team searched a 2003 Volkswagen Golf driven by an unidentified man, who is a U.S. citizen.

Thirty-nine bundles of crystal methamphetamine were found hidden inside the car’s rear quarter panels, the Border Patrol said in a statement.

The man was arrested on suspicion of narcotics smuggling and turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration, along with the methamphetamine. The vehicle was seized by Border Patrol.
