MISSION VIEJO Mater Dei star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown made up for lost time with JT Daniels on Saturday night.
And he made the top-ranked Monarchs that much better.
St. Brown caught three first-half touchdowns from Daniels in his return from a finger injury to help Mater Dei defeat New Jersey power Bergen Catholic, 62-14, at Mission Viejo.
Mater Dei (4-0), ranked No. 1 in Orange County and the nation by MaxPreps, combined St. Brown’s performance with a blocked punt by promising sophomore running back Chris Street and a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown by rising junior linebacker Mase Funa.
Funa scored early in the second quarter as Mater Dei opened a 24-0 lead and forced a fumble on a sack late in the third that defensive end Nathan Logoleo recovered in the end zone.
Mater Dei led, 62-7, going into the fourth against Bergen (2-1), ranked 21st in the nation by MaxPreps.
In his first game of the season, St. Brown finished with nine receptions for 147 yards, all of which came in the first half.
Daniels passed for 300 yards and five TDs
St. Brown caught his first touchdown on Mater Dei’s second play from scrimmage. Daniels fired a 25-yard dart that St. Brown caught on a slant route for a 6-0 lead with 8:09 left in the first period.
Street set up the possession by blocking a punt that he recovered at the Bergen 31.
St. Brown also made a leaping 6-yard TD reception and a 30-yard TD grab in which he out-jumped two defenders and wrestled to keep possession.
Mater Dei plays St. Mary’s of Stockton next Saturday at Levi’s Stadium.
