New train cars ready for tests

New state-of-the-art MBTA Orange Line train cars are headed to Boston, with the first four shrink-wrapped in plastic and staged for shipment from the Port of Shanghai in China.

The company making the cars, CRRC, is building a production facility in Springfield capable of churning out hundreds more passenger cars to replace the city’s aging fleet.

“The modern, open interior provides more room and accom- modates more people,” accor- ding to a company brochure. “New LED lighting offers a brighter passenger experience.”

The cars are due to arrive next month and will undergo “rigorous testing,” according to MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo, who tweeted about the cars. In addition to the LED lighting, the new cars offer wider side-door openings to allow for easier passenger boarding, “gap mitigation” devices that bridge the car to the platform, and more passenger emergency intercoms.

The production facility in Springfield is expected to begin operating in the spring of 2018, with the first car expected to roll off the line in western Massachusetts in January 2019.
