DANA POINT — When an Orange County Sheriff’s Department sergeant stopped for a cup of coffee at Starbucks in Monarch Bay Plaza on Tuesday, Nov. 14 he didn’t realize the coffee he was about to buy wouldn’t be his only morning jolt.
As he stood in line at 9:30 a.m. at a packed store in the 32800 block of Pacific Coast Highway, he heard a man scream, “He just stole my laptop,” said Sgt. Rich Himmel, detailing what happened to colleague Sgt. Jeff Anderson.
Anderson saw a scuffle out on the patio and watched as a man dressed in multiple layers of clothing yanked the laptop from its user, Himmel said. The sergeant sprang to action and stopped the man, arresting him just outside the shop on suspicion of robbery.
The man was identified as Eric Downey, 32. He identified himself as a transient, Himmel said.
Downey was taken to Orange County jail, Himmel said; his bail is $50,000. He will be arraigned on robbery charges Wednesday.
After the arrest, Anderson returned to the counter and got his venti dark roast.
