Kansas freshman forward Silvio De Sousa, who started practicing with the Jayhawks on Dec. 27 after graduating from IMG Academy, has been cleared for participation by the NCAA and is eligible to play in the Jayhawks’ game against Kansas State on Saturday, it was announced Saturday morning.
De Sousa, a 6-foot-9, 245-pound power forward originally from Angola, had been waiting for the NCAA to certify his status as an amateur.
“I know it’s a big relief to Silvio who has been very patient throughout this process,” KU coach Bill Self said Saturday morning in a statement.
Self said De Sousa was cleared Saturday morning. On Friday night, Self said in a text message to reporters that he was hopeful he would hear word on De Sousa’s status Saturday morning.
Self said Friday that De Sousa would likely play limited minutes until about Feb. 1, when he should be 100 percent ready for the rigors of college basketball.
De Sousa was the No. 25-ranked player in the Class of 2018 according to Rivals.com. He’s since been removed from the recruiting rankings now that he’s a college freshman.
