Trial delayed in killing of teen who knocked on man's door

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The trial for a Massachusetts man charged with fatally shooting a teenager who he thought was breaking into his home has been delayed.

A prosecutor requested more time this week to prepare for the manslaughter trial of Jeffrey Lovell. He is charged in the July death of 15-year-old Dylan Francisco.

Francisco and two others knocked on Lovell’s door in Chicopee believing it was a friend’s house. Lovell’s wife woke him up around 1 p.m. and said someone was trying to break in.

Police say Lovell told the group to leave, but they continued banging on the door until a window broke. They say he then fired a shot through the door.

The Republican reports the trial was moved back to Jan. 12.

The 43-year-old Lovell has pleaded not guilty.
