U.S.A. surf team earns gold after stellar performance at ISA World Junior Champi…

It was a glimpse into the future, a taste of what is to come when surfing hits the Olympic stage.

Standing on the podium on a beach in Japan, the USA junior surf team waved the country flag proudly after besting 41 other nations from around the world to earn team gold at the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships on Sunday, Oct. 1. The team won gold — a feat that’s only happened twice in the USA Surfing junior team’s history — after strong performances from the young surfers.

“It’s a dream,” said USA Surfing executive director Greg Cruse. “We knew we had a good team coming in. We knew gold was possible. The stars had to align because there’s so many good teams. We just kept rolling through the week.”

The team was led by Huntington Beach coach Joey Buran, and several local surfers had stand-out performances to help secure the points needed to nab the top spot. Hawaii’s team earned the silver medal, and host country Japan took home bronze. Australia came in fourth spot for the copper medal.
