Update: UCLA’s season-opening 63-60 win over Georgia Tech in Shanghai, China was overshadowed by the shoplifting scandal involving freshmen LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill and Cody Riley. The trio returned to the United States on Tuesday night, one week after being arrested for suspicion of stealing sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store next to their hotel in Hangzhou. Their status with the team in the future is still unclear. … Without nearly half of its freshman class, the Bruins survived a late comeback attempt by Georgia Tech. Freshman Kris Wilkes led the team with 18 points, but UCLA held off the Yellow Jackets with a clutch performance from junior guard Aaron Holiday, who scored seven of his 11 points in the final five minutes. Holiday added seven assists. … The Bruins dropped two spots in the AP poll after the narrow victory. … UCLA’s 63 points are the fewest for the Bruins in a game since Feb. 4, 2016 in a loss to USC. They never scored fewer than 74 points last season. … UCLA held an opponent to 60 or fewer points only twice last season, a 98-56 blowout over UC Riverside and a 78-60 win over Oregon State.
