Jeff Steffens, 31, was in Las Vegas watching the Route 91 country music festival with his girlfriend, Brittany Poling, and another couple when a gunman opened fire on the crowd that would leave more than 50 dead and more than 500 wounded. As he and his friends desparately fled, Steffens narrowly escaped death: a bullet grazed him, leaving a hole in his T shirt.

“Jason Aldean was on and at first it sounded like someone threw off some firecrackers that kind of sounded like guns but they were kind of sporadic, everyone thought it was a really bad joke. After maybe 10 bangs, it sounded like a fully automatic weapon, Jason Aldean ran off the stage and that’s when we really knew it was serious. There was no more music and the lights turned on and everyone starts panicking and running…

“There was a fence in the middle for cameras, we ducked for cover and started making our way towards that. At one point, we got down and I thought I got shot with a rubber bullet. Later, when we got to our room, I realized I was grazed with a bullet and my tank top has a bullet hole through it…

“I just kept hearing the gun shots, I looked up and saw flashes coming form the Mandalay Bay hotel. I saw a girl down with a puddle of blood around her and her boyfriend or husband hugging her…

“Everyone was freaking out, my girlfriend and I and our two friends, we stayed tight and finally I was like ‘we gotta get out of here.’ We were right in the open and I at least wanted to use that fence as a barricade. We were huddling up in a bunch of bodies, basically…

“We got to the fence and I threw my girlfriend over. Another girl begged me to help her, so I grabbed her and threw her over. I hopped the fence and I saw my friends huddled up. We went over another fence and just started running towards the gate. I just kept hearing gunshots the whole time…

“We got back to the hotel and couldn’t sleep, so around 2 or 3 a.m. we just packed up and drove back to LA…

“For me, getting hit, I don’t know, it’s surreal. The bigger thing was seeing everyone fully hit. When we got out of the concert area, there was no one around, just a few bodies. When we got out of the main concert area we saw people bleeding, we huddled up under a cop car. One guy had a gunshot in his leg and you could see the blood coming out, they were trying to put a tourniquet on it…

“Our friends, when we ran off and they were in the main control area, I guess that’s where people…
